BRAND EQUITY QUIZ 2010 PRELIMS - CHENNAI ROUND

The Prelims level was a tough one..The highest score was 24-25 and the cut off was 21. The teams that made it through were, 2 teams from Citibank, KPMG, NOKIA, TCS and SANMAR. But a controversy arouse after the end of the show when KPMG won. The second placed team TCS alleged that one member from KPMG did not belong to Chennai and was from Mumbai, which pissed Derek off to a big extent. The event management team is conducting their research and if proved to be so, TCS would walk away as winners, if not KPMG would make it through.

  1. I can think of a couple of questions that are dubious / wrong:

Q19. The answer can be pretty much anybody who is running on Linux. I am sure there are at least a hundred thousand answers to this question.

Q26. The answer is Two Litres and not 2 bottles. There is no restriction on the number of bottles.

  2. KPMG has always that reputation of doing anything to win a quiz,,thats what they also did in the last years tata crucible ,coimbatore edition.Knowing they cant win in chennai they took part in CBE giving a very lame execuse about doing some project there. But in the end they had to go back empty handed. So hopefully they have learnt their lesson and dont come back to Cbe.

  5. Yes Q.19 is a little modified. My apologies I havent framed it in the right way. I really dont remember the names of team members from KPMG or TCS. But recently from a tweet by Derek, he told me that KPMG has been disqualified and TCS has been declared winners.

  7. Don't be too harsh on the KPMG team. They are good quizzers and on that day, they did very well and were deserving winners.
I do agree though that what they did was not right and TCS was perfectly correct in protesting. After all, rules should be followed and if one team alone does not, then it is not fair on those who follow them scrupulously. Unfortunately, this is what happens when the prizes are so attractive and winning becomes very important. I can think of any number of instances in Tata Crucible (which allows teams to take part from any centre) where teams travel to supposedly easier places - in my view, this defeats the entire purpose. When such travelling teams lose in the 'easier' places (which happens more frequently than one may imagine), the local teams definitely have cause to be smug (as could be seen in one of the other comments from Coimbatore).
Kudos to Derek and his team for taking this seriously and acting immediately. Just a bit shameful that this is the second time this is happening at Chennai (I can think of a similar instance a few years back - that thankfully was sorted out before the regional final started). I hope Chennai does not get associated with such instances.
